Million Dollar Homepage Alternatives in 2026: Where You Can Still Buy Pixels

In 2005 a student named Alex Tew put a million pixels up for sale at $1 each. Five months later they were gone. The last 1,000 went on eBay for $38,100, and the whole thing grossed $1,037,100 (Wikipedia has the full timeline).

The page is still online, frozen exactly as it was. Which means if you want your name on something like it today, you need an alternative. There are more than you’d think, and they’re not all the same idea.

What made the original work

The Million Dollar Homepage had three things going for it: a number everyone understood (one million pixels, one dollar each), a hard limit (when it’s full, it’s full), and a lot of press. The smallest thing you could buy was a 10×10 block, so the real entry price was $100.

That limit is also why it stopped. Once the last pixel sold, there was nothing left to do but look at it.

The alternatives, sorted by how they work

1. Pixel-grid remakes

These copy the original format: a fixed grid, pay per pixel, keep your block. A couple of current examples:

  • milliondollarhomepage.lol sells 1,000,000 pixels at $1 each and describes itself as an independent project inspired by the original, not affiliated with it.
  • Pixelsboard is a 1000×1000 grid with a 3×3 minimum. The first 40,000 pixels were free, then prices start at $0.20 per pixel and rise as the grid fills.

Good for: people who want the classic “I own this exact spot” feeling. Watch for: once a grid fills up, late arrivals are locked out, and a small block on a big grid is genuinely small.

2. Crypto canvases

Some projects rebuilt the idea on-chain. billiondollarhomepage.lol, for example, sells pixels in 10×10 units starting at $10, with prices rising by level and proceeds going to Gitcoin to fund public goods.

Good for: people already comfortable with wallets. Watch for: if you’re not, the setup is most of the effort.

3. Free canvases that end

Reddit’s r/place is the famous one: in 2017 more than a million people placed about 16 million pixels over three days. It’s free and it’s wonderful, but it’s an event. When it ends, the canvas is archived and the next one starts from blank. (We wrote a whole piece on the history of shared internet canvases.)

4. Proportional billboards

This is the model TheWorldsBillboard uses, and it’s a different answer to the “what happens when it’s full?” problem. There is no fixed grid. Your space is sized by your share of everything contributed, so the board never sells out. The minimum is $3, there’s no account, you can pay by card or crypto, and every space gets its own page (here’s one, here’s another).

The honest trade-off: because it’s proportional, your percentage shrinks a little as other people join, unless you or someone else adds to your space. That’s the point of it being alive, but it’s worth knowing.

How to pick

  • Do you want a fixed spot or a living share? Grids give you coordinates. A proportional board gives you a slice that can grow.
  • Do you have a crypto wallet, and want to use it? If not, skip the on-chain options.
  • Does your link need to keep working? A 2017 check of the original homepage found that of 2,816 links, 547 were dead and 489 redirected somewhere else (source). A space with its own page, like the ones in our directory, gives people something to land on even if your site changes.
  • Is it a joke, a memory, or a business? All three are fine. It just changes how much you want to spend.

If you want the short version of how ours works, it’s on the how it works page. If you want to see who’s already there, Archi was first.

Your turn – claim your space on the billboard.
